Northern Express Company Plans Relocation Amid Business Boom
On November 24, 1899, the Grand Forks Herald reported significant business growth for the Northern Express Company in Grand Forks, with plans for an office relocation to accommodate the increased demand. The company nearly doubled its business throughout the year, indicating a robust economic environment in the area.
The Great Northern Express Company has experienced a remarkable surge in business in Grand Forks. According to reports, the company’s receipts in July 1899 reached $7,168, a substantial increase from $4,718 during the same month in 1898. This growth highlights the company’s strong performance and reflects favorable business conditions in the region.
A representative from the Great Northern Express Company confirmed that the Grand Forks office ranks among the best in the entire system, especially considering the city’s size. Currently, the office operates with only two wagons, the same number used when business levels were lower. Due to the increased volume of work, service has faced challenges this summer, prompting plans to add another wagon in the spring. This addition aims to enhance service quality and minimize complaints from customers.
The company’s lease for its current location, situated next to the St. John’s block, is set to expire in May 1900. Although the exact new location has not been finalized, discussions suggest that the building owned by Captain Powers, adjacent to Stanchfield’s clothing store on Third Street, is a strong contender. If this site is chosen, it could potentially house both a ticket office and express services, offering greater convenience for customers.
Plans for the new office include installing new fixtures and additional amenities, ensuring it will be one of the finest facilities along the line. The current quarters, particularly during the winter months, have presented difficulties due to cold conditions, making the move a timely decision.
As the Northern Express Company prepares for this transition, the growth in its business underscores a thriving economic landscape in Grand Forks. With the anticipated enhancements, the company is poised to improve its service and continue meeting the needs of its expanding customer base.
