Ohio State Stars Shine: Curry, Klare, and Jackson Lead Victory
Ohio State University showcased a dominant performance against Rutgers on October 14, 2023, securing a decisive 42-9 victory. The standout players for the Buckeyes included defensive end Caden Curry, tight end Max Klare, and running back Bo Jackson, who collectively earned top honors for their contributions.
Curry’s multifaceted performance was pivotal in Ohio State’s defensive strategy. He recorded a team-high six tackles, including two tackles for loss and two sacks. Notably, Curry also forced a fumble and recovered it, narrowly missing out on a touchdown when officials ruled he was down at the 1-yard line. This led to Klare catching an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Julian Sayin, demonstrating the ripple effect of Curry’s impactful play. Throughout the season, Curry has established himself as a key defensive asset, amassing 49 total tackles, leading the team in tackles for loss and sacks, and contributing to a strong defensive unit.
In addition to his touchdown reception, Klare also made significant contributions as a primary target in the passing game. He led all Ohio State receivers with seven catches for 105 yards. With injuries sidelining key players such as Carnell Tate, Jeremiah Smith, and Quincy Porter, Klare’s performance was not only impressive but crucial. His 100-yard outing marked just the sixth time an Ohio State tight end has achieved this milestone since 1960, and the first since Jeff Heuerman in 2013. Klare’s consistent performance over recent games has been a bright spot for the Buckeyes, as he has recorded 17 catches for 190 yards in the last three games.
Jackson continued to showcase his prowess as a freshman running back, reaching the century mark for the fifth time this season. Against Rutgers, he achieved a season-high of 19 carries for 110 yards and scored two touchdowns. His explosive running was instrumental in Ohio State’s overall offensive success, contributing to a total of 254 rushing yards against one of the weaker run defenses in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Other notable contributors to the rushing attack included Isaiah West, who added 48 yards on eight carries, and James Peoples, who scored on a 49-yard touchdown.
As the season progresses, the Buckeyes will continue to track individual performances through a points system for their Stars of the Game. Each player earning the First Star will receive three points, while the Second and Third Stars will earn two and one point, respectively. This initiative not only recognizes individual achievements but also adds an exciting layer to the ongoing competition within the team.
Ohio State’s dominant performance against Rutgers underscores the team’s depth and resilience, particularly in the face of injuries. With players like Curry, Klare, and Jackson stepping up, the Buckeyes are poised for continued success as they navigate the remainder of the season.
