Remembering John S. Hartpence: A Life of Love and Laughter
John S. Hartpence, affectionately known as Jack, passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, in Ocala, Florida. He was 77 years old at the time of his death. Born on March 19, 1948, Jack was the son of John and Mildred Hartpence. He was a devoted family man, celebrated for his kindness and sense of humor.
Education and Career
Jack grew up in Hudson Falls, New York, where he completed his high school education. He later attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, graduating in 1970. It was during his time at Plattsburgh that he met his future wife, Dorothy (Dot) Doyle, whom he married the same year.
Following his graduation, Jack began his career at Aetna before joining Travelers Insurance Company, where he worked as a Personal Account Representative. His dedication to service extended beyond his professional life; he also served in the Army National Guard.
A Family Man at Heart
Jack was a proud father to two sons, John (Laura) and Geoffrey (Courtney). He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren: Ben, Kiera, Lily, Emma, and Jack. Jack’s greatest joy came from engaging in family activities, whether it was playing sports in the backyard, cheering for Kiera at volleyball games, or enjoying board games with his granddaughters.
His love for sports was evident as he often shared the basketball court with Ben, fostering a close bond through friendly competition. Jack’s influence extended beyond just sports; he was also a cherished mentor and supporter in his grandchildren’s lives.
Passions and Memories
Growing up, Jack spent unforgettable summers on his grandfather’s farm in Jay, New York. This connection to nature fueled his love for the outdoors. He particularly enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and fly fishing. A highlight of his life was visiting Yellowstone National Park, which he often referred to as his favorite place on earth. He cherished his last trip there with his sons, reflecting on the memories created in such a stunning landscape.
Jack’s passing leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, their two sons, and his grandchildren. He also leaves behind siblings: Mary Gordon, Jim Hartpence, Tim (Mary) Hartpence, and Sue (Jeff) Curren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of Jack’s life is planned for his community at Summerglen in Ocala, Florida, and in Hudson Falls during the late spring. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Yellowstone Forever at PO Box 1857, Bozeman, MT 59771-1857 or via email at [email protected]. This gesture honors Jack’s enduring love for the natural world and the cherished memories created there.
