A St. Paul minister and artist, Peggy Pugh, is on a mission to spread joy this holiday season by creating and donating coloring books specifically for women living in shelters. Pugh aims to distribute 100 copies of her newly designed book, titled “Rest & Color Coloring Book for Women: Christmas Edition,” along with coloring tools, by December 3, 2025.

Reflecting on her own childhood, Pugh recalls how coloring provided her a sanctuary amid family turmoil. “Coloring is very healing,” she stated. With this sentiment in mind, she focuses on providing a creative outlet for women experiencing homelessness and displacement during the holidays. Currently, Pugh has secured sponsorship for 53 sets and is seeking additional support to meet her goal of 100.

Creating Moments of Rest and Joy

Pugh observes that the holiday season often highlights joy and togetherness, yet many women face loneliness and hardship. “We focus a lot on how joyful the holidays are,” she noted. “There’s another side of the story, where some people don’t know where their family members are or their family members have given up on them.” For those struggling, the holidays can transform into a painful reminder of what they lack.

At 72 years old, Pugh has achieved much in her life, from her career as an author and minister to her entrepreneurial ventures. Despite a busy schedule, she finds solace in coloring, which transports her to a peaceful state. She emphasizes that women in shelters deserve moments of calm and creativity, stating, “They have value and deserve gifts this holiday season.”

Pugh’s book aims to provide these women with not just a gift, but a chance to unwind and reflect. “I want to be able to lift the spirits of some women,” she explained. Her intention is to convey that they are worthy of being thought about and deserving of gifts without having to earn them.

Supporting the Cause

Inside the coloring book, recipients will find pages filled with winter and holiday-themed illustrations, including nutcrackers, snowflakes, and images that celebrate the season’s spirit. Pugh has also made a conscious effort to include illustrations of Black women and even features a cartoon representation of herself.

Pugh encourages individuals to consider purchasing a coloring set for a woman in need instead of spending that money on themselves. “I’m hoping that there are enough individuals out there who would be willing to be selfless,” she said. Each “Rest & Color” book, along with a set of colored pencils, is priced at $15, with individual books available for $10. Purchases can be made through her website, rrpeggypugh.com.

Looking ahead, Pugh plans to expand her offerings with coloring books tailored for men, as well as seasonal editions for events like Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month. Her initiative not only provides a creative escape but also fosters a sense of community and support for women who may feel forgotten during this festive time.

Through her actions, Pugh reinforces the idea that art can be a powerful tool for healing and connection, especially during the holidays.
