The United Way of Whitman County has announced a significant milestone, reporting that over 1,000 children under the age of five are now enrolled in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. This marks the first time that the program has reached half of all eligible children in the area. The announcement was made in a news release on October 6, 2023.

The increase in enrollment is attributed to the hard work of volunteers and Washington State University student interns. These dedicated individuals have set up booths at various community events each summer, successfully promoting the program throughout the county. The Imagination Library aims to foster early literacy by delivering a free book to each participant’s home every month.

Since its launch in Whitman County in April 2022, the program has enrolled more than 1,544 children and has delivered nearly 34,000 books across 22 towns. This impressive achievement highlights the community’s commitment to supporting early childhood education and ensuring that children have access to reading materials from a young age.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is designed to encourage a love of reading among young children. Each book is selected to inspire imagination and improve literacy skills, making it a vital resource for families in Whitman County. As more children engage with books, the program aims to create a lasting impact on their educational journey.

For those interested in supporting the Whitman County Imagination Library program, donations can be made through the United Way’s website at whitmanunited.org/imaginationlibrary. The success of this initiative illustrates the power of community involvement and the importance of fostering a culture of reading among young children.
