On November 1, 1997, WDAY-TV celebrated a significant milestone when reporter Kevin Wallevand and photographer Chad Pederson garnered the station’s first Emmy Award for their documentary, “The Quilt: Hope from the Heartland.” This landmark achievement marked a historic moment for North Dakota television, showcasing local talent and storytelling on a national platform.

The acclaimed documentary highlighted a quilt crafted by the women of North Buffalo Church in Kragnes, Minnesota. The film followed the quilt’s journey all the way to a village in Angola, illustrating the deep connections forged through community efforts and the power of handmade artistry.

As a follow-up to their Emmy win, Wallevand and Pederson attended a service at North Buffalo Church last month, where they were honored in a heartfelt ceremony. Expecting a casual visit with the women featured in the documentary, the two were met with an unexpected celebration. The church was beautifully decorated with signs congratulating them on their Emmy recognition.

During the service, Rev. Larry Vigen incorporated the story of the quilt into his sermon, emphasizing how individuals can impact the lives of others through acts of kindness. In a touching moment, approximately 15 quilters from the church came forward alongside Wallevand and Pederson to present them with meaningful gifts.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of quilts to both men. Wallevand received a replica of the quilt featured in the documentary, while Pederson was similarly honored. As emotions ran high, Wallevand struggled to express his gratitude, stating, “As neat as it was professionally to get that Emmy, it was a lot more rewarding to me personally to get that quilt. It was a neat day. They are a neat group.”

The quilt, symbolic of hope and community, continues to provide comfort to a recipient in Angola, while the memories of that special day at North Buffalo Church will undoubtedly remain with Wallevand and Pederson for years to come. This event not only celebrated their professional success but also reinforced the bonds created through storytelling and shared experiences.
