Buffalo Retains Full-Time ADA Advocate Position Amid Cuts

Brittney Montgomery will continue her role as the City of Buffalo’s first full-time Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator following assurances from Buffalo Common Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski and the incoming administration of Mayor Sean Ryan. These officials have confirmed that the position will not be subject to budget cuts as part of ongoing financial reviews.

Nowakowski indicated he is filing documents to protect the full-time ADA Advocate position from potential reductions. This role was established after a BTPM NPR investigation in 2022 revealed that Buffalo had not appointed a legally-required coordinator for nearly a year. “Advocating for people living with disabilities inside City Hall is nonnegotiable for me,” Nowakowski stated. “I am relieved and excited that Mayor-elect Sean Ryan’s administration agrees.”

The full-time ADA Advocate position is vital for ensuring compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Montgomery, who is Deaf, was appointed to this role after serving as the Inclusion and Diversity Coordinator under the previous administration.
