Environmental Stewardship Needs Attention

In a letter published on December 1, Doug Peterson commended Paul Rogers for shedding light on the successes of the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project. However, he pointed out that not all areas along the shoreline are receiving adequate environmental support.

Peterson specifically mentioned the 600-acre Palo Alto Flood Basin, located near Mountain View’s Pond A2W. He noted that the motorized sluice gate, designed to control muted tidal flows into the basin’s estuary, has been inoperable for over five years. The city of Palo Alto is responsible for the maintenance of this sluice gate but has hesitated to undertake the costly repairs. This situation adversely affects many vulnerable wildlife species that rely on the muted tidal flows that the sluice gate is meant to regulate.

Peterson argues that directing financial resources more equitably across the entire shoreline would better serve the needs of local wildlife, emphasizing the importance of maintaining ecological balance.

He expressed alarm that the government appears to endorse extrajudicial measures that could result in the loss of innocent lives while undermining due process.
