DOJ Establishes Second Amendment Section to Strengthen Gun Rights
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced the creation of a dedicated Second Amendment section to bolster the enforcement of gun rights across the United States. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon made the announcement on Monday, indicating that this initiative aims to address significant challenges faced by citizens, including the rising costs and lengthy delays associated with concealed carry permits.
Dhillon, who oversees the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, stated that the establishment of this section marks a pivotal shift in the agency’s approach to gun rights. “I’m really excited about this,” she remarked, emphasizing that the DOJ will actively protect and advance citizens’ right to bear arms as part of their civil rights agenda. She quoted Attorney General Pam Bondi, asserting, “The Second Amendment is not a second-class right.”
Focus Areas for the New Section
According to Dhillon, the newly formed section will tackle a variety of issues affecting gun rights on both state and local levels. “Some of the things we’re seeing, and that is going to be the focus of our work around the country, includes multi-thousand-dollar costs for citizens to apply for concealed carry permits,” she explained. The assistant attorney general also pointed out that many jurisdictions are imposing unreasonably long delays and are enacting laws that may infringe on rights protected under recent Supreme Court precedents.
Dhillon highlighted the importance of gun rights for vulnerable populations, including women and individuals with disabilities. She stated, “Gun rights equalize the ability of those of us who might otherwise be more vulnerable to protect ourselves.”
In her remarks, Dhillon reiterated the DOJ’s commitment to defending the Second Amendment. She referenced an executive order issued by President Trump, which emphasized the administration’s intent to uphold gun rights from the outset of his tenure. “Stay tuned,” she said, “you’re going to see a lot more action from this Department of Justice to protect your Second Amendment rights.”
Legal Experts Weigh In
Legal experts have reacted positively to the establishment of the Second Amendment section, although some caution against complacency. Oliver Krawczyk, an attorney specializing in Second Amendment litigation at Ambler Law, described the creation of this section as a “welcome change.” He noted, “For years, individuals and grassroots organizations have had to fight unconstitutional firearm regulations alone, and so federal help will always be appreciated.”
However, Krawczyk also urged the DOJ to collaborate with pro-gun organizations rather than merely resisting ongoing legal challenges to existing federal gun control laws. He stated, “This DOJ should not ignore its own complicity in violating the Second Amendment.”
The establishment of the Second Amendment section represents a significant development in the ongoing discussion surrounding gun rights in the United States. As the DOJ prepares to implement its new initiatives, many will be watching closely to see how these changes impact citizens’ rights and the broader legal landscape surrounding firearms in the country.
