Experience a Legal Jump at San Clemente Pier Fundraiser

This weekend, thrill-seekers in Orange County can legally jump off the San Clemente Pier, but for a good cause. On October 8, 2023, the Pier Pride Foundation is hosting a unique fundraiser where participants can make a $1,000 donation to take the plunge into the Pacific Ocean. Typically, jumping off the pier incurs a significant fine, but this event offers an exception with marine safety supervision.
Lori Donchak, a board member of the Pier Pride Foundation and co-founder of the nonprofit, emphasized the importance of this initiative. “The funds raised will help improve the entrance of the pier, including clearing out landscape and restoring the base,” she said. The San Clemente Pier attracts around 2 million visitors annually, leading to substantial wear and tear that necessitates these renovations.
Preserving a Historic Landmark
The San Clemente Pier is nearing its centennial, set to celebrate 100 years in 2028. Donchak expressed the goal of revitalizing this historic structure to ensure it serves the community well into the future. “We are trying to put her in her very best version for 2028,” she added, highlighting the significance of the pier as a landmark in the city.
Participants in the fundraiser will not only experience the thrill of jumping off the pier but will also contribute to its preservation. After jumping, participants will swim or ride a water scooter back to shore, where they can celebrate their contribution to the pier’s future.
Community Engagement and Support
The event underscores the importance of community involvement in maintaining local landmarks. As the area faces challenges such as funding cuts for public media, initiatives like this highlight how community support can lead to tangible improvements. The Pier Pride Foundation’s efforts reflect a commitment to preserving San Clemente’s rich heritage while engaging residents in active participation.
In addition to the legal jump, the foundation aims to raise awareness about the ongoing need for community support in preserving local sites. As the pier continues to attract visitors and serve as a backdrop for countless memories, its upkeep is paramount for future generations.
As the weekend approaches, excitement builds among those eager to contribute to this unique fundraising initiative. The San Clemente Pier not only offers a thrill but also serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility to maintain and cherish community landmarks.
