Greeley Launches Search for New Public Works Director After Departure
The city of Greeley has initiated the search for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino on December 1, 2023. Trombino, who served in the role for four years, had a significant impact on various infrastructure projects during his tenure, including the enhancement of the Greeley-Weld County Airport and the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program.
Trombino joined the city in 2021 after his previous role as director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa. His leadership was pivotal in advancing several city initiatives, notably the Catalyst project, which is set to be voted on citywide concerning a zoning ordinance approved by the council earlier this year. “Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city,” stated Acting City Manager Brian McBroom. “We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.”
During his time in Greeley, Trombino also initiated plans for new stormwater improvements, which represent a substantial investment of $500 million to enhance the city’s infrastructure and storm management capabilities. Additionally, he played a key role in attracting Alquist 3D, a company specializing in 3D printing for construction, which collaborates with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project.
Trombino’s salary at the time of his departure was $228,800, according to Greeley Public Information Officer Kim Kappel. The city has not disclosed the reasons for his departure, citing it as a personnel matter without further elaboration.
New Director Responsibilities and Salary Range
The job description for Trombino’s successor outlines responsibilities that include managing ongoing large-scale city projects, securing necessary funding, and facilitating communication across various city departments. The anticipated salary range for the new public works director is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum salary of $234,800 based on the candidate’s experience. For context, the median income for Greeley residents is approximately $76,462, according to 2024 census data.
The city aims to expedite the hiring process for a new public works director to ensure continuity in Trombino’s initiatives, with no plans to appoint an interim director. Meanwhile, the city’s deputy public works director, Will Jones, is scheduled to take on the role of public works director in nearby Loveland starting January 12, 2024.
In addition to the search for a public works director, Greeley is also looking to fill the position of city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee, who was recently appointed as the next city administrator of Portland, Oregon. The transitions in leadership reflect a period of change for the city, as Greeley continues to focus on enhancing its infrastructure and services for residents.
