Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Responds to Tattoo Controversy

Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner has addressed controversy surrounding a tattoo he received years ago, which has been linked to Nazi imagery. In a video posted on social media, Platner stated that he was unaware of the tattoo’s connotations until recently, insisting that it does not reflect his beliefs or values.
The tattoo, originally a skull and crossbones, was covered up with a design featuring a Celtic knot and dogs, which he described as a more accurate representation of who he is today. “I have lived a life dedicated to antifascism, antiracism and anti-Nazism,” Platner said. He expressed regret over the misunderstanding, stating, “It was not until I started hearing from reporters and D.C. insiders that I realized this tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol.”
During the video, Platner lifted his shirt to reveal the new design and explained its significance. “This has come up because the establishment is trying to throw everything it can at me. It is terrified of what we are trying to build here,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to progressive values.
Platner revealed that he got the original tattoo “years ago” while on leave in Croatia with fellow Marines, describing himself as “very inebriated” at the time. He firmly denied any knowledge of its Nazi associations, stating, “I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that.”
This incident has emerged as Platner campaigns to challenge incumbent Senator Susan Collins for a seat in the U.S. Senate. His candidacy has gained traction, earning endorsements from prominent figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders. However, the controversy surrounding his past social media posts, including references to communism and political resistance, has sparked scrutiny.
In a recent interview, Platner attributed some of his earlier controversial remarks to struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder following his military service in the Middle East. He stated that he felt disconnected from his community and troubled by his experiences overseas. “I was unmoored from any community,” he explained, shedding light on the context of his past statements.
As Platner navigates his campaign amid these challenges, he remains focused on presenting a clear vision for Maine and addressing the concerns of his constituents. His recent statements reflect a commitment to promoting inclusivity and combating hate in all its forms, further underscoring his dedication to progressive ideals.
The tattoo controversy has sparked discussions not only about personal accountability but also about how candidates confront their pasts in the public eye. As the race for the Senate seat heats up, Platner’s response to this issue will likely shape public perception and impact his campaign’s trajectory.
