Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner Responds to Tattoo Controversy

Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner has addressed controversy surrounding a tattoo he received years ago, which has been linked to Nazi imagery. In a video posted on social media, Platner stated that he was unaware of the tattoo’s connotations until recently, insisting that it does not reflect his beliefs or values.

The tattoo, originally a skull and crossbones, was covered up with a design featuring a Celtic knot and dogs, which he described as a more accurate representation of who he is today. “I have lived a life dedicated to antifascism, antiracism and anti-Nazism,” Platner said. He expressed regret over the misunderstanding, stating, “It was not until I started hearing from reporters and D.C. insiders that I realized this tattoo resembled a Nazi symbol.”

During the video, Platner lifted his shirt to reveal the new design and explained its significance. “This has come up because the establishment is trying to throw everything it can at me. It is terrified of what we are trying to build here,” he added, emphasizing his commitment to progressive values.

Platner revealed that he got the original tattoo “years ago” while on leave in Croatia with fellow Marines, describing himself as “very inebriated” at the time. He firmly denied any knowledge of its Nazi associations, stating, “I absolutely would not have gone through life having this on my chest if I knew that.”
