SEPTA Expands Red Bus Lanes Across Center City and South Philadelphia
SEPTA, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, has announced an expansion of its red bus lanes to enhance public transit efficiency in Philadelphia. This initiative will see the introduction of dedicated bus lanes in three key areas: Center City and South Philadelphia. The additions will take place along sections of Chestnut Street, Walnut Street, and Oregon Avenue.
These corridors were designated as “Tier 1” priority routes in the city’s 2021 Transit Plan, aimed at improving the overall functionality of the public transportation system. The specific segments for the new bus lanes include Chestnut Street between Broad and 21st Streets, Walnut Street between Broad and 19th Streets, and Oregon Avenue between 5th and Front Streets.
The work on Oregon Avenue is set to commence on the evening of March 4, 2024, dependent on weather conditions. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the speed of bus services throughout the city.
In a related move, the Philadelphia Parking Authority is preparing to implement new measures to enforce parking regulations, including the use of artificial intelligence cameras to ticket vehicles parked in bus lanes. This initiative aligns with SEPTA’s goals of prioritizing public transport and ensuring that bus lanes remain unobstructed for transit vehicles.
As the expansion of bus lanes progresses, SEPTA aims to provide a more efficient transit experience for residents and visitors alike, ultimately promoting the use of public transportation in the city. The agency continues to collaborate with local authorities to further enhance the transit infrastructure throughout Philadelphia, reflecting a commitment to sustainable urban mobility.
