Zonta Club Delivers Joy to Kauai’s Children’s Justice Center
A recent toy donation from the Zonta Club of Kauai has brought new hope to children at the Children’s Justice Center in Lihue. On November 27, members of the club delivered a significant collection of plush toys, aiming to brighten the lives of vulnerable children who seek refuge and support through the center’s programs.
Eliza Kobayashi, a dedicated member of the Zonta Club of Kauai, expressed her heartfelt intentions, stating, “I just want the children to feel loved and be happy.” Kobayashi led the toy collection campaign and contributed many stuffed animals from her own personal collection.
Regina Carvalho, president of the Zonta Club of Kauai, emphasized the significance of this initiative as part of the club’s commitment to the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. “In addition to the toy donation, we want our members to learn more about the Children’s Justice Center, which operates under the Hawaii State Judiciary,” she explained.
The Children’s Justice Center is designed to support a multidisciplinary team that includes professionals from the Kauai Police Department, forensic nurses, and various investigators. Together, they coordinate efforts to address and investigate child abuse and neglect cases. According to information provided by the Hawaii Judiciary, over 50 percent of reported crime victims in Hawaii are under the age of 18, highlighting the critical need for such services.
Melody Lopez, Advisory Chair of the Zonta Club of Kauai, remarked on the impact of their donation, stating, “Our recent donation is a small but meaningful contribution to the healing journey of our keiki.” Lopez, whose mother provides forensic nurse services at the Children’s Justice Center on Hawaii Island, acknowledged the importance of creating safe spaces for children affected by abuse.
The Children’s Justice Center serves approximately 1,000 children annually, although this figure underrepresents the widespread issue of child abuse. Research indicates that only one in ten children report such incidents, which further complicates efforts to address the problem effectively.
Sean Drzonsc, a staff member at the Children’s Justice Center, expressed optimism about the donation, stating, “The kids are going to love this. Normally, we have a room full of toys. This donation will fill up the room.” The availability of new toys can significantly enhance the environment for children who have experienced trauma.
The center’s unique model thrives on public-private partnerships, with local Rotary Clubs having established each Neighbor Island center. These partnerships enable the respective Friends of the Children’s Justice Center, a nonprofit group, to provide essential resources for the center and the professionals working with affected children and families.
The Zonta International 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign commenced on November 25, 2025, following a proclamation issued by Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami to the Kauai Zonta clubs. The campaign will continue until December 10, inviting community members to take the “Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women” pledge. A special display at the Kauai Society of Artists’ “Small Works, Big Show” exhibit at Kukui Grove will facilitate this engagement.
The collaborative efforts of the Zonta Club of Kauai and the Children’s Justice Center illustrate the community’s commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of children. Through awareness and action, they aim to foster a safer environment for the younger generation, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to feel loved and secure.
