Teen Hospitalized After Dangerous Social Media Challenge
A teenager from St. Petersburg, Florida, has been hospitalized due to injuries sustained while attempting a dangerous social media challenge. Fire officials reported that the teen experienced burns after trying to create a makeshift jet engine using a jam jar filled with rubbing alcohol and igniting it.
Dr. Jasmine Patterson, the medical director of the pediatric emergency room at Muma Children’s Hospital at Tampa General Hospital, revealed that her facility has seen an uptick in patients injured from similar social media trends. As a regional burn center and level one trauma center, Tampa General has treated numerous adolescents aged between 14 and 18 years who have been harmed while attempting viral challenges.
Increased Risks from Social Media Trends
Dr. Patterson noted that her team began observing severe burn cases linked to social media challenges approximately a few years ago. She stated, “I’d say probably a few years ago is when I started to see the bad burns from these viral social media challenges and this new jar challenge. We’ve definitely treated some burns related to that.”
Videos circulating on social media platforms depict individuals using a jam jar, pouring rubbing alcohol inside, and then lighting it on fire. Dr. Patterson emphasized the dangers associated with such activities, explaining, “The problem is it is burning in such a very high heat that often the glass actually melts or explodes.”
Importance of Parental Guidance
In light of these incidents, Dr. Patterson urges parents to actively monitor their children’s online activities and discuss the potential dangers of viral trends. She advises, “You need to be proactive, start the conversation with your child that some things are put on social media that are not safe for kids, not even safe for adults sometimes.”
Parents are encouraged to review the content their children are engaging with online, having open discussions about what constitutes safe behavior. Dr. Patterson recommends that families look through videos together to assess their safety and determine whether any challenges are worth attempting. She stresses the importance of supervision, stating, “You need to be there for your kid and supervise any challenge.”
As social media continues to influence behaviors, particularly among youth, the call for greater awareness and parental involvement becomes increasingly vital to prevent further injuries linked to hazardous online trends.
