UA Little Rock Professor Joins National Documentary for US 250th

Dr. Arya Basu, an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, has been selected to participate in “Our American Story,” a national documentary initiative celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. This project aims to compile the largest audiovisual archive of American narratives, which will be preserved in the Library of Congress as a testament to the diverse experiences that shape the nation.
The “Our American Story” initiative seeks to capture the personal journeys, values, and visions for the future of America from individuals across all 50 states. Dr. Basu stands out as the only researcher from Arkansas featured in this project, with his interview conducted at the historic Old State House Museum in downtown Little Rock on October 6, 2023. He described the location as “aptly chosen and soaked in history,” reflecting on the significance of setting in storytelling.
During the interview, Dr. Basu expressed his surprise and honor at being selected. “I was speechless and spellbound,” he said. “Even now, I can’t believe they found my story. Being part of America’s 250th celebration is an honor I never imagined.”
As a computational scientist specializing in human-computer interaction and biomedical visualization, Dr. Basu’s work is deeply influenced by personal experiences, particularly his mother’s challenging heart surgery and the passing of his uncle, an applied physicist who inspired his passion for science. “My uncle had a huge impact on who I am as a scientist,” he noted. “Those experiences with my family taught me that science, like life, is about compassion and persistence.”
Reflecting on his journey from India to Arkansas, Dr. Basu shared how the state’s natural beauty has influenced his professional and personal outlook. “When I first crossed the Mississippi River into Arkansas, I was struck by the abundance of trees and the sense of peace,” he remarked. He likened the essence of science to that of soul food, stating, “Science, like good soul food, comes from a soul that is at peace with its environment.”
Dr. Basu also provided insight into the message he hopes to convey as America approaches its 250th birthday. He emphasized the importance of perseverance in both scientific pursuits and nation-building, saying, “Persistence is what keeps this nation moving forward. Building a nation is not easy, and maintaining one is even harder. For the next 250 years, I hope we never lose sight of the need to stay persistent in pursuing what our collective hearts know is right and important.”
Looking forward, Dr. Basu’s research will focus on human decision-making and spatial reasoning, which includes studies on maze navigation and enhancing artificial intelligence capabilities for Air Force missions through eye gaze signals.
Being featured in “Our American Story” is a significant milestone for Dr. Basu, who noted that his family was thrilled to learn his story would be preserved in a national archive. “My family is over the moon,” he said, adding with a touch of humor that some joked he must be entering politics. “But truly, they’re proud that something from our story is now a part of American history.”
Dr. Basu believes that science, compassion, and creativity are unifying themes that connect all Americans. “Science has no borders,” he said. “It’s not just where you are that matters. It’s what you strive to contribute to the world. Being part of this project reminds me that every story, no matter where it begins, can inspire something greater.”
Through his participation in this documentary, Dr. Basu contributes to a larger narrative that celebrates the diverse fabric of American society, ensuring that future generations can learn from the past and draw inspiration for the future.
