Ability First Sports Empowers Youth with Disabilities Through Sports
At a meeting on October 28, 2023, Scott Dinits, Co-Director of Ability First Sports, spoke to members of the Chico Noon Exchange Club about the organization’s ongoing commitment to supporting individuals with physical disabilities through sports and recreational activities. This initiative, originally founded by Eric Snedeker in 1985, aims to empower youth and adults by promoting active and healthy lifestyles.
Eric Snedeker, who served as the Director of Ability First Sports while also teaching in the Adapted Physical Education program at Chico State University, passed away on April 24, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. His legacy continues to inspire the organization’s efforts in creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
Empowering Through Sports and Recreation
Ability First Sports focuses on providing year-round activities and summer camp programs tailored for youth and adults with physical disabilities. The organization aims to foster participation in various sports, recreation, and leisure activities that promote physical fitness and social interaction. Over the years, many athletes associated with Ability First have successfully engaged in wheelchair club teams, the Paralympics, and community-based sporting events.
Highlighting the importance of these programs, Dinits emphasized that participation not only enhances physical skills but also boosts self-esteem and community involvement. By offering expert coaching and a supportive environment, the organization prepares participants for success in both competitive and recreational settings.
Upcoming Summer Camp for Youth
Looking ahead, Ability First Sports has announced its 41st annual summer camp, scheduled to take place from June 21-27, 2026. This camp will offer specialized coaching in various adapted sports for youth aged 6 to 18 with physical disabilities. The camp serves as a significant opportunity for participants to develop their athletic skills, build friendships, and enjoy a supportive community.
As the organization continues to expand its programs, it remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment where individuals with physical disabilities can thrive through sports and recreation. Dinits’ presentation highlighted not only the achievements of Ability First but also the profound impact such initiatives have on the lives of participants and their families.
