Cowboys Face Tough Decisions After Humbling Loss to Broncos
The Dallas Cowboys are grappling with significant challenges following a disappointing 44-24 defeat to the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High. The loss has intensified discussions regarding potential roster changes ahead of the upcoming NFL trade deadline on November 4, 2025. As the Cowboys’ performance faltered, questions arose about the team’s ability to compete effectively in the remainder of the season.
Despite an initial lead from a defensive interception, Dallas struggled to maintain momentum. The Broncos scored touchdowns on six of their next eight possessions, leaving the Cowboys unable to recover. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed disappointment in his team’s performance, stating, “I don’t think any of us coached or played well enough.” He emphasized the importance of owning the line of scrimmage, which they failed to do against Denver.
The Cowboys’ offense was particularly troubling, with quarterback Dak Prescott throwing two interceptions after a streak of four games without a turnover. Prescott acknowledged the team’s need for consistency, stating, “Two unacceptable plays. We got to find consistency, honestly.” He highlighted the frustration of not playing to their established identity, particularly on the offensive side of the ball.
Despite their struggles, the Cowboys have managed to avoid consecutive losses this season, yet they have also not achieved back-to-back victories. This inconsistency raises concerns about their playoff aspirations. Former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo compared this year’s team to his own 2013 squad, which faced a similar struggle for playoff positioning. Romo noted that the Cowboys are likely to hover around a .500 record, making their playoff chances slim.
Currently holding a record of 3-4-1, the Cowboys have opportunities to secure wins against teams like the Arizona Cardinals (2-5), Las Vegas Raiders (2-5), and others. Achieving victories in these matchups could elevate their record, but they will need to defeat stronger opponents such as the Philadelphia Eagles (6-2) and the Kansas City Chiefs (4-3) to solidify their playoff hopes.
Following the loss, owner Jerry Jones indicated his openness to roster improvements, stating, “This loss is discouraging…but if I saw a proposition for us to help this team, I would look at it on the merits.” His comments suggest that the Cowboys may be considering trades to bolster their lineup.
Prescott, while acknowledging the potential for trades, emphasized his confidence in the current roster. He stated, “I trust and I like the guys that we have…Our roster is OK. Can it be better? That’s for you guys to write about.” He urged his teammates to focus on improving their performance rather than relying on external changes.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Cowboys must carefully evaluate their options. The outcome of their next games will not only impact their season but also determine the direction of the franchise as they seek to reclaim their competitive edge. With tensions high and expectations mounting, the coming weeks will be crucial for the Dallas Cowboys.
