The legacy of former United States Senator Jake Garn is being actively preserved by a dedicated group of his former colleagues and supporters. Recently gathered at the historic Alta Club in Salt Lake City, the team reflected on Garn’s significant contributions to the state of Utah, particularly his role in the Central Utah Project, which secures critical water resources from the Colorado River.

Despite having left office in 1993, the 93-year-old Garn remains a revered figure among his supporters. The gathering featured conversations about his integrity, bipartisan outreach, and commitment to public service. According to Kimball Young, a founding member of the Jake Garn Legacy Team, the initiative seeks to ensure that Garn’s accomplishments are not forgotten.

The team formed in 2019 when Scott Howell, a former Utah Senate minority leader, spearheaded a campaign to rename the rebuilt Salt Lake City airport in Garn’s honor. This effort highlighted not only his political achievements but also his distinguished career as a pilot and astronaut. Garn flew combat missions during the Korean War and orbited the Earth 108 times as part of the Space Shuttle program in 1985.

While the airport renaming did not materialize, the team successfully raised $200,000 for the cause. The airport instead agreed to name a new greeting room after Garn and established a permanent exhibit to honor his contributions. The camaraderie developed among the team members led them to continue meeting regularly to celebrate Garn’s legacy and the bonds formed during their time together.

“We felt it was essential to create a space for Jake’s legacy, ensuring that his impact on our state is remembered,” said Bob Weidner, a longtime associate of Garn. “He exemplified the ideals of effective government service.”

Despite his Alzheimer’s diagnosis, Garn continues to live at home, cared for by his daughter, Ellen Garn. Those who worked closely with him maintain a strong connection, visiting him frequently. Alvina Wall, who served as Garn’s personal secretary for 37 years, and her husband, Danny Wall, often take him out for lunch and reminisce about their shared experiences.

“It’s challenging to see him this way, but we cherish the memories we shared,” Alvina remarked. “He recognizes us, which is comforting, but beyond family, he struggles to remember others.”

The Jake Garn Legacy Team’s commitment to honoring their former leader and his contributions to Utah reflects a broader desire to keep his memory alive. In a time when political figures often fade from public view, this group stands as a testament to the enduring impact of Garn’s work and the friendships forged through shared public service.
