Jalen Hurts Struggles as Eagles Fall to Chargers in Overtime
On November 12, 2023, Jalen Hurts faced intense scrutiny following a disappointing performance that saw the Philadelphia Eagles lose to the Los Angeles Chargers 22-19 in overtime at SoFi Stadium. Hurts, the Eagles quarterback, threw four interceptions during the game, contributing to a total of five turnovers, a significant factor in the team’s third consecutive loss.
Despite the team’s offensive struggles, Hurts publicly supported his offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo. The Eagles have now lost three games in a row for the first time since the end of the 2023 season. Hurts acknowledged his poor performance, stating, “Winning is a point of pride to me… It starts with me and how I play, how I lead, and how I go out there and do my job.”
The game began with promise for the Eagles, who managed 365 total yards compared to the Chargers’ 275. Running back Saquon Barkley achieved his second 100-yard rushing game this season, finishing with 122 yards on 20 carries. His 52-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter briefly gave the Eagles a 16-13 lead, their first lead since a matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on November 23, 2023.
Meanwhile, wide receiver A.J. Brown continued his strong performance streak, recording 100 yards receiving for the third consecutive game. The Eagles’ defense also showed resilience, sacking Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert seven times, with Jalyx Hunt leading the charge with 2.5 sacks.
Despite these efforts, Hurts’ turnovers ultimately overshadowed the team’s achievements. His final interception occurred after the Eagles won the overtime coin toss but were unable to capitalize on their offensive possession. After the Chargers tied the game with a 46-yard field goal from former Eagles kicker Cameron Dicker, Hurts attempted a risky pass intended for Jahan Dotson in the end zone. The pass was deflected, leading to an interception by Tony Jefferson, sealing the Eagles’ fate.
“I knew it was going to be a tight window throw… Ultimately, it’s a play I didn’t make,” Hurts reflected. His four interceptions marked a career high, surpassing his previous record of three, which he achieved in two different games against the New York Giants and New York Jets.
Looking ahead, the focus will shift to whether Hurts can regain his form. He acknowledged, “For me, we lost the game, and I didn’t play well enough to help us win the game.” The Eagles will need to regroup quickly as they seek to reverse their fortunes in the coming weeks.
