Newport and Newport Central Catholic both faced disappointing endings to their football seasons during the regional championship round. The Thoroughbreds traveled to Campbellsville for the third consecutive year, while the Wildcats returned to Louisville to take on Kentucky Country Day for the second straight season. Unfortunately for both teams, they returned home without a victory.

Newport Falls to Kentucky Country Day

In a decisive matchup, Kentucky Country Day (KCD) defeated Newport 37-6, securing their second consecutive regional title. The Bearcats established an early advantage with a pick-six that contributed to a 17-0 lead by halftime. Newport managed to narrow the gap to 17-6 with a touchdown pass from Jaden Conley to Kendell Buck-Barber. However, KCD responded with a powerful performance in the fourth quarter, scoring 20 points to seal the game.

The Bearcats demonstrated their rushing strength, amassing a total of 227 yards on the ground. Parker Rudolph led the charge with an impressive 117 rushing yards, including a notable 74-yard run that extended the lead to 31-6. In contrast, Newport struggled offensively, finishing the game with only 84 rushing yards on 26 attempts. Conley threw for 129 yards but was intercepted twice, ending Newport’s season with an overall record of 8-5.

Thoroughbreds Shut Out by Campbellsville

Newport Central Catholic faced a similar fate in their matchup against Campbellsville, suffering a 28-0 defeat. The Eagles jumped out to a commanding 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on a 59-yard passing play and a 48-yard fumble return. Despite their best efforts, NewCath was unable to score throughout the game, unable to break Campbellsville’s defensive hold.

This defeat marked the third consecutive year that the Thoroughbreds have lost to Campbellsville, which now boasts a record of 12-1 for the season. Newport Central Catholic also concludes their season with an 8-5 record.

Both teams’ exits from the playoffs serve as a reminder of the fierce competition present in regional high school football. The victories for KCD and Campbellsville not only highlight their athletic prowess but also set the stage for their continued success in the postseason.

As the season wraps up, local support remains crucial for independent journalism that covers these teams and the community. Contributions allow for ongoing coverage of the stories that matter to Northern Kentucky, ensuring that local narratives continue to be told.
