Patrick Mahomes Sparks Outrage with Thanksgiving Turkey Choice
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has stirred controversy among NFL fans with his unconventional approach to Thanksgiving turkey. Known for his fondness for ketchup, Mahomes recently showcased his culinary choice in a commercial for Adidas, prompting mixed reactions from viewers as the holiday approaches.
On November 23, 2023, the Chiefs will face the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium, following the Cowboys’ impressive comeback win against the Philadelphia Eagles, which kept their playoff aspirations alive. The Chiefs enter this matchup with a record of 6-5 after a challenging season, hoping to solidify their position in the playoff race.
In the Adidas commercial, Mahomes emphasizes the importance of family gatherings during the holiday season, stating, “Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks. Return home. See family, and meet new friends.” However, the ad quickly took a turn when Mahomes proceeded to cover a turkey leg in ketchup—a move that left many fans feeling queasy.
Reactions on social media were swift and critical. One user on X remarked, “Just when I was starting to forgive him,” while another quipped, “Cowboys by 10.” Additional comments included disbelief, with one fan stating, “This is just wrong,” and another humorously linking his culinary choices to the team’s current record.
Mahomes, who co-owns a steakhouse with teammate Travis Kelce, is unabashed in his love for the condiment. In a previous interview with Barstool Sports, he confessed to enjoying ketchup sandwiches during his childhood. “Yeah, it’s actually gotten a lot better as I got older,” he explained. “When I was younger, I used to eat ketchup sandwiches, just bread and ketchup. That is disgusting.” He humorously speculated that the condiment might have contributed to his impressive throwing ability.
Despite the backlash, Mahomes’ culinary preferences reflect a broader trend in sports culture where athletes embrace their personal tastes in public. As fans prepare for the holiday, the spotlight will not only be on the game but also on Mahomes’ unique approach to Thanksgiving fare.
With the game just days away, both the Chiefs and Cowboys will be looking to make a statement. For Mahomes, the challenge lies not only in leading his team on the field but also in navigating the culinary opinions of a nation that holds its Thanksgiving traditions dear.
