San Jose Sharks Provide Positive Update on Jeff Skinner’s Injury
In a promising turn of events, the San Jose Sharks announced that forward Jeff Skinner is recovering from a lower-body injury sustained last week. Initially feared to be serious, the injury—resulting from an awkward collision against the boards during a game against the Calgary Flames—has been confirmed not to involve any broken bones.
During the first period of the game on October 26, 2023, Skinner lost his balance while pursuing a loose puck. His right skate collided forcefully with the boards, leading to immediate concerns about his mobility. He left the ice unable to put weight on his right leg, prompting the team to place him on injured reserve on October 28, 2023.
Recovery Timeline and Team Adjustments
Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky provided an update on October 30, 2023, stating that Skinner’s recovery is progressing well. “It’s going to be week to week, but I think we dodged a bullet,” Warsofsky remarked, describing the news as “not horrible.” He indicated that Skinner could return to the ice in approximately two weeks.
Skinner, who joined the Sharks as a free agent on a one-year, $3 million contract in July, has contributed significantly to the team this season. In his 16 games played, he has recorded seven points, with four goals and three assists. Throughout his extensive career in the National Hockey League (NHL), Skinner has tallied a remarkable 377 goals and 329 assists across 1,095 games.
Prior to his injury, Skinner primarily played as a middle-six forward, averaging 12:22 of ice time per game. To fill his absence, the Sharks have recalled center Zack Ostapchuk from their AHL affiliate. Ostapchuk participated in practice on October 30, 2023, centering the fourth line alongside Barclay Goodrow and Ryan Reaves.
Upcoming Games and Team Outlook
The Sharks are set to embark on a four-game homestand, commencing on October 31, 2023, against the Utah Mammoth. This will be followed by matches against the Los Angeles Kings on November 2, 2023, the Ottawa Senators on November 4, 2023, and the Boston Bruins on November 5, 2023.
Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the Sharks navigate these upcoming games, particularly in light of Skinner’s recovery. Updates on his status are expected as the team continues to assess his progress. For now, the Sharks remain focused on securing victories while adapting to the temporary changes in their lineup.
