San Jose Sharks goalie Alex Nedeljkovic is poised to start against the Philadelphia Flyers on December 5, 2023, as Yaroslav Askarov deals with an illness, according to head coach Ryan Warsofsky. Askarov is expected to be available as a backup during the game, which marks the Sharks’ third stop on a five-game road trip.

Nedeljkovic recently showcased his skills, recording 28 saves, including 15 in the third period, leading the Sharks to a convincing 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on December 3. This win was particularly significant for Nedeljkovic, as it marked his first win since November 7, when he achieved a stellar performance against the Winnipeg Jets, stopping 32 of 33 shots in a 2-1 win.

Reflecting on his recent performance, Nedeljkovic expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I’m happy that I put us in a position to win, honestly. If the guys can pull through and we can get two points, it’s huge. They played awesome tonight.” He emphasized the team’s efforts in limiting opportunities for the Hurricanes during the first two periods and their strong defensive play in the final period.

Sharks’ Goalie Situation and Playoff Implications

Tuesday’s matchup will be the first time this season that Nedeljkovic starts consecutive games for the Sharks (14-13-3). Askarov, who has emerged as the team’s primary goaltender, has recorded a commendable record of 9-4-0 with a .928 save percentage in 13 games since November. His performance has been instrumental in helping the Sharks re-enter playoff contention.

The last instances of Nedeljkovic starting consecutive games were during early March of the previous season when he played against the Colorado Avalanche and the Vegas Golden Knights as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Askarov’s last outing came on December 1, when he allowed three goals on 23 shots in a 4-1 setback against the Dallas Stars.

Currently, the Sharks occupy the second and final wild card spot in the Western Conference, holding a points percentage of .517. In contrast, the Philadelphia Flyers (15-9-3) are in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division, having secured four wins in their last six games. The Flyers sit just one point shy of a playoff spot, intensifying the stakes for both teams as they prepare for this crucial encounter.

Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching as Nedeljkovic takes the ice, hoping to build on his recent success and secure another vital victory for the Sharks.
