Ximena Cordero Barr has emerged as a standout player for the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) women’s volleyball team. The sophomore libero played a pivotal role in the Aggies’ success as they advanced to the semifinals of the Big West Tournament after defeating the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) 3-1 on a recent Friday afternoon.

Head coach Dan Conners recognized Cordero Barr’s exceptional skills early in her recruitment. He noted three key attributes: her elite-level volleyball skills, a unique ability to read plays, and a joyful exuberance that uplifts her teammates. “First, her volleyball skills were already at such an elite level—especially her passing and defense,” Conners remarked. “Second, she just sees the game differently. Her ability to read plays and put herself in the right spot is something you don’t see every day.”

Cordero Barr’s connection to UC Davis was immediate. “The first time I came for my visit, I fell in love with Davis. I love these people. I can connect with my coaches,” she expressed, highlighting her affinity for the campus and community. This strong bond has contributed to the team’s unity, which Cordero Barr believes is a cornerstone of their success. “Our team is very connected and very united to show what UC Davis women’s volleyball is,” she said.

As the top seed entering the tournament with a conference record of 16-2 and an overall mark of 20-6, the Aggies were poised for a strong showing. Their performance throughout the season, including a regular-season conference championship, has marked one of the best seasons in recent years. Following the victory over UCSB, they prepared to face either Cal Poly or Long Beach State in the next round.

Cordero Barr’s contributions extend beyond her on-court performance. She has been named the Big West’s Libero of the Year, ranking second in the conference with an impressive average of 4.59 digs per set. Over the course of the season, she recorded a total of 76 aces, showcasing her all-around skills. Conners emphasized her growth, stating, “She’s become more consistent, more focused, and it’s showing in the numbers.”

Her defensive prowess has earned her recognition as Defensive Player of the Week on three occasions. Notably, she achieved a career-high of 36 digs in a comeback victory against CSU Northridge, surpassing her previous record of 35 digs in a match against UC Irvine on October 4, 2023.

Cordero Barr’s journey to UC Davis began in Tijuana, Mexico, where she first discovered her passion for volleyball at the age of 10. After graduating from Otay Ranch High School in Chula Vista, California, she transitioned to life in the United States. The language barrier posed challenges initially, as Spanish is her native language, but her commitment to learning English paid off once she started high school.

“I didn’t have any English classes before,” Cordero Barr explained, reflecting on her journey. “Once I started attending Otay Ranch, my English improved thanks to taking classes on learning the language.” Her academic pursuit continues, as she is currently majoring in landscape agriculture.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Cordero Barr is actively involved in community service. She participates in Project Mercy, a non-profit organization that builds homes for families in Tijuana. Her involvement stemmed from a family connection, as one of her sisters was already engaged with the organization.

Cordero Barr’s positivity and enthusiasm resonate within the team. “One of the best things about Ximena is just who she is as a person,” Conners noted. “She gets along with everyone. She’s fun, she’s positive, and she brings this genuine enthusiasm for life and volleyball that lifts our whole group.”

As the Aggies continue their tournament journey, Cordero Barr remains focused on creating lasting memories and looks forward to her junior and senior years at UC Davis. With her impressive skills and infectious energy, she is undoubtedly a key player to watch in the future of UC Davis women’s volleyball.
