Westminster Owls Surge to State Quarterfinals with Dominant Offense
The Westminster Owls secured their place in the Class 3A state quarterfinals with a commanding 45-21 victory over Atholton on March 15, 2024. Under the leadership of head coach Chris Bassler, the team showcased a powerful offensive line, essential to their success throughout the season. The Owls will face Guilford Park in the next round, continuing their quest for a state championship.
Central to the Owls’ success is the offensive line, which has been the backbone of the team. The unit, composed of four seniors who contributed to last year’s county championship, has fostered a culture of trust and physicality. Bassler noted, “We knew coming in, this would be a strength of our team. These guys have put in the work in the weight room, in practice and have continued to get better.”
The starting offensive line includes tackles David Gerting and Aiden Wengert, guards Drake Geho and John Okiddi, and center Ryan Dunne. Their performance has been critical, providing the necessary support for quarterback Rory O’Connor and running backs Jack Hitchcock and Nick Compher. O’Connor expressed confidence in his line, stating, “I never have to worry about pressure from the other side, because I know David will hold it down.”
The Owls began their season with a challenging loss, narrowly falling 12-10 to Franklin in Week 1. Following the defeat, the team faced additional hurdles when Hitchcock, a first-team All-County running back, suffered a toe injury. Despite these setbacks, the offensive line adapted, enabling Compher to take on the role of the primary running back. He has since emerged as a standout player, currently leading Carroll County with 1,117 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.
The group’s early commitment to teamwork and preparation laid the groundwork for their success. Gerting highlighted the mental growth the line has experienced, stating, “This year, I’ve been focused on leading and making sure I give it all I have on every play. I’m more aggressive and there’s no plays off.”
As the season progressed, the Owls transformed their initial struggles into a dominant run through county play. Winning nine consecutive games, the offensive line has consistently opened lanes and created opportunities for Compher, who has taken full advantage of their efforts. Hitchcock has also returned to form, averaging over nine yards per carry and contributing seven touchdowns in just four games this season.
Offensive line coach Mike Cain emphasized the unit’s determination, stating, “They want to manhandle anyone in front of them. All gas, no breaks.” As the Owls prepare for their showdown against another Howard County team, Guilford Park, the emphasis remains on the offensive line’s performance.
Bassler remarked on the critical role the line plays in the team’s overall success, saying, “It’s no secret that our success has been built in the trenches and come at the line of scrimmage. These guys are driving the bus right now.” The upcoming match promises to showcase their skills further as the Owls strive for a state title.
