**6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern Afghanistan, 20 Dead**
UPDATE: A devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked northern Afghanistan at 12:59 a.m. on October 7, 2023, claiming at least 20 lives and injuring over 640 others, with reports of 25 critically injured, according to officials. The quake’s epicenter was located 22 kilometers (14 miles) west-southwest of Khulm, deepening the crisis in a nation already grappling with natural disaster challenges.
The tremor was felt across multiple provinces, including Balkh, Samangan, and Kunduz. Eyewitness accounts reveal widespread destruction, with hundreds of homes reduced to rubble. Local resident Ahmad Zia described the chaos, stating, “When I came out, the houses were destroyed and the air was very polluted.” His account highlights the urgent need for rescue efforts as many remain trapped under debris.
Health officials warn that casualty figures may rise as rescue operations are still underway. The Deputy Spokesman for Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, Qari Taj Mohammad Hemat, confirmed that 643 people are injured, with many transported to hospitals in Balkh and Samangan for treatment. As rescue teams rush to affected areas, the Taliban government announced they are mobilizing resources to assist those in need.
In a distressing report from the Badakhshan province, at least 800 houses were either partially or completely destroyed in one village, raising concerns about the potential for further casualties as communication remains hampered in remote regions. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake struck at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles), emphasizing the quake’s strength and potential for aftershocks.
The United Nations is already on the ground assessing needs and delivering urgent aid, expressing solidarity with the affected communities. A spokesperson stated, “We stand with the affected communities and will provide the necessary support.”
The impact of the earthquake is compounded by the challenges faced by the country, where infrastructure is often inadequate in responding to natural disasters. Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari expressed condolences, stating that the country stands with the Afghan people during this difficult time, amidst ongoing peace talks strained by recent border tensions.
As officials continue to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts, the situation remains critical. Residents in the hardest-hit areas are still reeling from the shock, with many struggling to recover personal belongings from the rubble. The urgency for humanitarian assistance is palpable, as communities unite to support one another in the aftermath of this tragic event.
Stay tuned for further updates as rescue operations continue and more information becomes available.
