Aldine ISD Launches AI Tool to Boost Bilingual Reading Skills
UPDATE: Aldine Independent School District (ISD) has just launched an innovative AI reading tool, Amira, aimed at boosting bilingual skills among students. Inside Black Elementary, students are using this technology to enhance their reading abilities in both English and Spanish, gaining confidence while receiving immediate feedback.
This game-changing tool is already making waves in classrooms across Aldine ISD, where educators report that students are engaging more actively in their learning. The program listens to students as they read aloud, providing corrections and support tailored to individual needs. One student, 10-year-old Mia Vallejo, shared her enthusiasm for Amira, noting, “If we get something wrong, she is going to correct it so we learn it.”
Aldine ISD’s Chief Academic Officer, Faviola Cantu, emphasizes that the goal is to foster literacy in both languages while maintaining the essential human connection provided by teachers. “Every student is working with Amira as their personal tutor,” Cantu stated, highlighting the program’s role in enhancing educational outcomes without replacing classroom instruction.
The district, known for its commitment to biliteracy, has expanded the use of Amira to all first through fifth-grade classrooms after a successful pilot program that yielded significant improvements. As students practice reading at their own pace, teachers can focus on small group instruction, ensuring that each child receives the attention they need.
Parents are also getting involved, utilizing the program at home to track their child’s progress and skills development. Cantu reports that there has been a positive response from families, with no negative feedback so far. “Our parents are really excited about the program because they can work with their students at home,” she said.
Aldine ISD has seen remarkable reading gains in recent state assessments, reflecting both strong instruction and the support provided by Amira. Cantu reassures that the use of artificial intelligence is meant to enhance teaching, not replace it. “Artificial intelligence will not ever replace our teacher,” she affirmed, underscoring the value of dedicated educators.
Looking ahead, Aldine ISD plans to continue monitoring the effectiveness of Amira throughout the school year, adapting its approach based on teacher feedback and student performance. With this forward-thinking initiative, Aldine ISD is paving the way for a new era in bilingual education, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills needed for a diverse and interconnected world.
Stay tuned for more updates as Aldine ISD leads the charge in innovative bilingual education.
