Alfa Romeo Extends Giulia Production Until 2027 Amid EV Shift
UPDATE: Alfa Romeo has officially extended production of the Giulia and Stelvio models until 2027, a decision just announced by CEO Santo Ficili. Initially set to end this year, the extension comes as the automaker recalibrates its strategy amid shifting market demands for electric vehicles (EVs).
The production will continue at the Cassino plant in Italy, where the models have gained a loyal following. This move highlights Alfa Romeo’s commitment to maintaining its iconic sedan and SUV in the lineup while they adapt to new technological advancements. The Giulia and Stelvio have been significant competitors to the likes of the BMW 3 Series, and their extension marks a significant moment for fans and potential buyers.
Alfa Romeo’s decision stems from slower-than-expected EV adoption rates, prompting the company to reconsider the timeline for releasing next-generation models. Originally, Stellantis aimed for these successors to be fully electric, but the plan is now shifting to accommodate internal combustion engines. The automaker invested €1 billion in developing the Giorgio platform, which both the Giulia and Stelvio utilize, under the leadership of the late Sergio Marchionne.
In the meantime, the current models will remain available despite the absence of electrification. Alfa Romeo is taking additional time to ensure that the upcoming STLA Large platform can effectively support gas engines for the next-gen Giulia and Stelvio. As consumers await these updates, the current lineup will continue to attract attention.
During the presentation of the updated Tonale, Ficili emphasized the significance of this decision in light of evolving consumer preferences and market conditions. The Giulia and Stelvio are not alone in their longevity; other Stellantis models, such as the Fiat Panda and Dodge Durango, have also seen extended production timelines.
As for what’s next, industry experts speculate that the successors to the Giulia and Stelvio may feature the powerful twin-turbo inline-six “Hurricane” engine from the Dodge Charger Sixpack. Additionally, Alfa Romeo has hinted at possibly incorporating Maserati’s V-6 engine for the high-performance Quadrifoglio versions.
This development is crucial for automotive enthusiasts and potential buyers alike, as it signals that Alfa Romeo is committed to delivering high-performance vehicles while adapting to the challenges of electrification. The decision not only reflects market realities but also underscores the brand’s dedication to its heritage and customer base.
Stay tuned for further updates as the automotive landscape continues to evolve, and Alfa Romeo prepares for the next chapter in its storied history.
