Artillery Shell Strikes Patrol Car on I-5 During Marine Demo
URGENT UPDATE: An artillery shell detonated over California’s Interstate 5 on October 20, 2025, striking a California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle during a Marine Corps demonstration. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the patrol car sustained damage from debris, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred as part of the U.S. Marine Corps’ 250th Amphibious Capabilities Demonstration at Camp Pendleton. This live-fire event showcased the Navy-Marine Corps’ ability to project combat power globally. However, the premature detonation of a 155mm artillery round mid-air raised serious safety concerns, prompting immediate action from the CHP.
California Highway Patrol Chief Tony Coronado described the incident as “unusual and concerning,” emphasizing the rarity of live-fire training over active freeways. “It is highly uncommon for any live-fire or explosive training activity to occur over an active freeway,” he stated.
In response to the incident, the Marine Corps has launched an investigation. Capt. Gregory Dreibelbis stated, “We are aware of the report of a possible airborne detonation outside the designated impact area.” He assured that the demonstration underwent rigorous safety evaluations, with multiple safety layers in place. Following the explosion, all live-fire demonstrations for the day were canceled.
California Governor Gavin Newsom had previously closed the affected section of I-5 as a precautionary measure. Newsom criticized the decision to conduct the demonstration over a civilian route, calling it “dangerous” and a reckless misuse of military resources. “This could have killed someone,” he remarked, highlighting the potential for tragedy.
The CHP has filed an internal report on the incident and recommended an after-action review to enhance communication and coordination among federal, state, and local agencies for future events. This review aims to strengthen safety protocols surrounding public roadways during military demonstrations.
As this situation develops, authorities are urging the public to remain informed about safety measures in place during military training exercises. The incident has sparked a broader conversation about the appropriateness of conducting live-fire demonstrations near populated areas, particularly in emergency situations.
Stay tuned for updates as investigations continue and the CHP releases further information regarding their findings and recommendations for future training events.
