Bangot Dak Shines in CU Buffs’ 95-79 Win Over UC Davis
UPDATE: Bangot Dak electrified the crowd as the CU Buffs defeated UC Davis 95-79 earlier today, marking a significant milestone as they improved to 5-0 for the first time since the 2019-20 season. Dak, who is returning from a knee injury, showcased his recovery with a stunning alley-oop dunk that ignited Colorado’s game-opening 10-0 run.
Despite still regaining full confidence in his knee, Dak’s performance was pivotal. “I told (Hargress) before the game, ‘Just go throw it at the square. I’m the only person that can go get it,’” Dak shared after the game. His explosive play and determination were clear signs that the spring is indeed back in his step.
After not practicing during the summer and missing a four-game exhibition trip in Australia due to his injury, Dak has found his rhythm. In just the last two games, he shot 8-for-10 against UC Davis, raising his shooting percentage to .632 (12-for-19) in that span. His 18 points today marked his third-highest scoring game of his career, trailing only his 20-point performance against Iowa State.
In addition to his scoring, Dak demonstrated a newfound aggressiveness on the boards, averaging 7.2 rebounds per game, a significant increase from last season’s 3.9 rebounds. This newfound intensity is crucial as the Buffs prepare for their next challenge against San Francisco in the Acrisure Holiday Classic, scheduled for noon MT on CBS Sports Network this Thursday.
“I feel like I’m getting closer,” Dak stated. “I definitely feel a difference from game one to (UC Davis). I’m feeling better day by day.”
The Buffs have been on an offensive surge, scoring at least 90 points in four consecutive games for the first time since the start of the 2023-24 season. Last year, they only hit the 90-point mark once. However, there are concerns on the defensive end, as CU has allowed three opponents to shoot over 51% thus far.
Point guard Barrington Hargress noted the challenges presented by UC Davis, saying, “They definitely gave us some long possessions, and they also just played really hard. We’ve got to do better of just imposing our will.”
The upcoming two-game tournament in Palm Desert, California, will serve as the Buffs’ first road test, albeit on neutral ground. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Dak’s continuing recovery and the team’s ability to tighten their defense while maintaining their offensive prowess.
Stay tuned for more updates as the CU Buffs aim to extend their winning streak and solidify their place in the national rankings.
