URGENT UPDATE: The CalFresh Fruit and Vegetable EBT Pilot Project has just received a significant funding boost of $36 million, enabling the program to continue aiding families struggling with food affordability. This renewal comes at a critical time, as food banks in Los Angeles faced unprecedented demand due to the longest government shutdown in American history.

The funding will allow CalFresh to operate for approximately 10 months, a stark improvement from its previous allocation of $10 million, which only sustained the program for about three months. Under this initiative, CalFresh recipients can receive immediate rebates on their EBT cards when purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables at participating locations, up to $60 a month.

State Senator Laura Richardson, who represents areas including Carson and Compton, emphasized the urgency of this funding, stating, “You know, people are hurting. The number one thing that we hear that people are concerned about is affordability.” Her commitment to the program highlights the pressing need for food assistance in the community.

Currently, there are approximately 90 participating retailers and farmers markets where recipients can utilize this program. To find a list of these locations, visit the official CalFresh website.

The renewed funding is a response to the escalating crisis faced by many families in the region, as rising food prices continue to strain household budgets. The program aims to not only improve access to nutritious food but also to support local farmers and markets in the process.

As the situation develops, authorities encourage eligible participants to take full advantage of this assistance. The impact of this funding is expected to resonate throughout the community, providing much-needed relief and resources for families facing food insecurity.
