Congress’s Salaries Frozen Again at $174,000 Amidst Budget Crisis
BREAKING: Members of Congress will NOT receive a pay increase this year, remaining at an annual salary of $174,000. This decision follows the passage of a government funding bill that President Donald Trump signed today, which includes a provision freezing lawmakers’ salaries for another year.
The bill, which extends funding for the government until January 30, 2024, includes language that blocks an automatic cost-of-living adjustment. This means that while other federal employees receive annual raises, members of Congress will see their pay stagnate at a figure last adjusted in 2009.
This latest development is particularly significant as it highlights the challenges and public perception issues lawmakers face. Many have pointed out the optics of increasing congressional salaries after a government shutdown that affected hundreds of thousands of federal workers, causing chaos in air travel and threatening vital assistance programs like SNAP.
Republican Rep. Andrew Clyde of Georgia recently stated, “I would like to see how well that would go over if we did that to all federal employees,” emphasizing the growing discontent among lawmakers regarding their stagnant salaries.
Despite the freeze, there is a growing consensus among both parties that congressional salaries should reflect the demands placed on lawmakers. House Speaker Mike Johnson, who earns $223,500 due to his leadership role, noted that the frozen salaries could deter qualified individuals from entering public service. He remarked, “Over time, if you stay on this trajectory, you’re going to have less qualified people who are willing to make the extreme sacrifice to run for Congress.”
Echoing this sentiment, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has argued that to attract a diverse range of candidates, particularly those from working-class backgrounds, Congress must reevaluate its compensation structure.
Currently, if cost-of-living adjustments had not been blocked each year since 2009, rank-and-file lawmakers’ salaries would be around $221,600, according to the Congressional Research Service. This persistent pay freeze raises questions about the future of representation in Congress, as it may limit opportunities for those who cannot rely on independent wealth.
Last year, Congress nearly approved a modest pay increase that would have allowed for a raise of up to $6,600. However, public backlash, largely fueled by figures like Elon Musk, who criticized the measure, led to its failure.
As the government funding deadline approaches, the implications of this salary freeze are being felt throughout the political landscape. The effects on Congressional representation and the ability to attract diverse candidates to serve in public office will likely continue to spark debate.
The next steps in this unfolding situation will be closely monitored. What happens after the funding extension in January could impact not just lawmakers, but the entire political climate in Washington, D.C. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
