Connecticut State Police Urge Caution as Snow Hits Tuesday
URGENT UPDATE: Connecticut State Police are alerting drivers to prepare for hazardous roadway conditions as significant snowfall is expected on Tuesday, December 5. Accuweather forecasts 1 to 3 inches of snow beginning late in the morning, making safe travel a top priority.
Officials are emphasizing the importance of caution and are asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel during the snowfall. If travel is unavoidable, police urge drivers to check the latest road conditions before setting out.
“We hope you won’t have to call us,” said a police spokesperson, “but rest assured, we will assist all motorists who may be stuck on the roads or involved in motor vehicle accidents.”
To ensure safety, drivers should take several precautions: make sure windshield wipers are in working order, ensure the vehicle has sufficient fuel for the trip, and clear any snow or ice off the car before driving. Additionally, drivers should inform a family member or friend of their travel route and carry a fully charged cell phone.
While on the road, Connecticut State Police recommend keeping headlights on and maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle ahead to allow for proper reaction time, particularly on icy surfaces. Reducing speed on snow-covered roads is crucial, and using turn signals can enhance safety.
Authorities are also reminding drivers to give snowplows ample space to operate effectively. If a vehicle becomes stuck or disabled, staying inside the vehicle is critical for safety, and calling 911 for assistance is advised.
In case of a breakdown, it’s essential to arrange for vehicle removal promptly to allow Connecticut’s Department of Transportation to clear the roads effectively. Failure to do so may result in towing.
“When you see emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or maintenance vehicles on the side of the road with flashing lights, it’s your responsibility to move over or slow down,” police stated. “This law helps protect workers and first responders and reduces the risk of accidents.”
As the storm approaches, Connecticut State Police will be actively patrolling state roadways and highways to ensure public safety. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and take these warnings seriously to minimize risks during this winter weather event.
