Dodgers Executives Join Lakers Amid Major Ownership Transition
UPDATE: In a significant move for the Los Angeles sports scene, Farhan Zaidi and Andrew Friedman, key executives from the Los Angeles Dodgers, are now advising the Los Angeles Lakers as the team transitions ownership from the Buss family to Mark Walter. This development was confirmed by multiple sources to ESPN just moments ago.
The ownership transition marks a pivotal shift for the Lakers, with Walter officially approved as the majority owner on October 29, 2023. The sale was valued at an astonishing $10 billion, underscoring the high stakes involved.
Zaidi, who currently serves as a special adviser to the Dodgers and is known for his analytics expertise, is acting as Walter’s representative, facilitating this critical transition. Meanwhile, Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, is in a consulting role, primarily assisting Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka.
Both executives are expected to play prominent roles within TWG Sports, the newly created entity overseeing Walter’s sports holdings, which includes the Lakers and the WNBA team, the Los Angeles Sparks. Sources indicate that Zaidi has also begun consulting with the Sparks, further solidifying his involvement in Walter’s sports ventures.
In a dramatic move reflecting the new direction under Walter, the Lakers recently terminated several members of their scouting department, including Joey and Jesse Buss, who confirmed the news to ESPN’s Shams Charania. This decision illustrates the immediate changes occurring within the organization as Walter solidifies his influence.
The Lakers and Dodgers, two of Los Angeles’ most iconic franchises, are now aligning under a shared ownership model that could redefine their futures. As both teams prepare for upcoming seasons, the impact of this transition will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
Expect further developments as Walter and his team implement their vision for the Lakers and Dodgers. The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated, as both franchises seek to capitalize on their new leadership dynamics and competitive aspirations.
Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story. The landscape of Los Angeles sports is changing rapidly, and the implications for both teams could be monumental.
