Ford Partners with Renault to Revive EV Lineup in Europe
BREAKING: Ford is urgently restructuring its European strategy by announcing a partnership with Renault to develop and manufacture electric vehicles (EVs). This collaboration comes as Ford grapples with a drastic decline in market share, plummeting from an impressive 1.2 million cars sold in 2005 to just 256,750 cars in the first ten months of 2025.
The latest data from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association reveals Ford’s market share has dropped to a mere 2.9 percent. With two months left in the year, this downward trend is expected to continue, leaving Ford scrambling for solutions after discontinuing key models like the Ka, Fiesta, Focus, and Mondeo.
In a bold move, Ford is shifting its focus to small electric vehicles, leveraging Renault’s expertise in manufacturing. The upcoming models, set to launch in early 2028, will be built on the Ampere platform in northern France. Ford assures customers that these new EVs will carry “authentic Ford-brand DNA,” despite being engineered by Renault.
While the exact models remain undisclosed, they are anticipated to be smaller vehicles, drawing from Renault’s successful line-up, which includes the Twingo and the Renault 5. Ford aims to differentiate these models significantly from their Renault counterparts, promising unique driving dynamics and features.
These new EVs will not replace the combustion-powered vehicles Ford has phased out but will instead cater to a market increasingly leaning towards electric options. However, as these vehicles will be priced higher than similarly sized internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, Ford is unlikely to regain the substantial market share it once held.
The financial implications are also concerning; producing EVs remains costlier than traditional vehicles, which could pose challenges for profit margins. Ford’s strategy of partnering with Renault is seen as a necessary step to accelerate new model launches and maintain relevance in Europe’s competitive automotive landscape.
In a related development, Ford and Renault are exploring joint efforts in the light commercial vehicle sector, signaling an expansive partnership aimed at mutual growth.
As Ford embarks on this new chapter, the automotive industry will be watching closely for how this partnership unfolds and impacts the market. Consumers can expect more announcements in the coming months as Ford strives to reestablish its foothold in Europe amid fierce competition.
