Freshman Goalie Mathis Rousseau Posts Shutout in UMaine’s 3-0 Win
URGENT UPDATE: University of Maine freshman goalie Mathis Rousseau stunned fans with a remarkable performance, achieving a 21-save shutout in a critical 3-0 victory over Boston College on Saturday night. This win comes just one day after UMaine suffered a heavy 7-3 loss to the Eagles, marking Rousseau’s first start in 21 days.
Rousseau, who hadn’t played since a thrilling 8-5 win against Boston University, stepped up following a difficult outing by Albin Boija, who allowed six goals on 27 shots. “It went pretty well. They’re obviously a good team and everybody was pretty pumped up to get back at them today after yesterday’s game,” Rousseau said, clearly energized by the opportunity.
The young goalie showcased impressive rebound control, limiting opponents’ second chances. “I didn’t give them second chances very often today. And I played the puck pretty well,” Rousseau added. The Boisbriand, Quebec native emphasized the challenge of maintaining performance levels during a long layoff. “When you don’t play that much and finally get your chance, you’re pretty pumped up about it,” he noted.
Rousseau’s experience includes starting five games for Team Canada in the 2023-24 World Junior Championships, where he recorded the tournament’s third-best goals-against average at 2.00 and fourth-best save percentage at .912. Before joining UMaine, he played for Moncton and Halifax in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
Coach Red Barr praised Rousseau’s performance, stating, “We gave up some Grade-A chances but he made some saves all night and kept us ahead.” He also highlighted the team’s improved defensive play, saying, “The guys blocked more shots and did more of the little things tonight than we did last night.”
In addition to Rousseau’s standout performance, freshman right wing Miguel Marques made a significant impact by scoring two goals, further solidifying UMaine’s success. “He is pretty opportunistic. He has a good offensive mind,” Barr remarked.
As the University of Maine hockey team continues to build momentum, all eyes will be on Rousseau as he looks to maintain this level of excellence in upcoming matches. The team’s ability to bounce back from defeat and rally together is a testament to their resilience and determination.
Stay tuned for more updates on UMaine hockey as the season progresses, and watch for Rousseau’s next performance as he aims to lead his team to further victories.
