Governor Newsom Demands Apology After Artillery Shell Incident

UPDATE: California Governor Gavin Newsom is calling for an apology from former President Donald Trump and Senator JD Vance after a live artillery shell detonated during a Marine Corps training celebration on August 26, 2023. The incident occurred over Interstate 5, raising serious safety concerns and prompting immediate backlash.
The explosive detonated prematurely, striking two vehicles, including one belonging to Vance’s motorcade. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the incident has ignited fury from Newsom, who took to social media to express his outrage. “The shrapnel that hit CHP vehicles from Trump and Vance’s military live-munitions demonstration came from this ordnance. It’s no small thing,” Newsom’s office stated, sharing a photo of the artillery.
In a follow-up post, Newsom emphasized, “Donald Trump and JD Vance put lives at risk to put on a show. If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them.” The governor’s comments come after he previously warned about the risks associated with the planned live-fire exercise, which was part of the Marine Corps 250th anniversary celebrations.
Officials from Vance’s office dismissed Newsom’s concerns, arguing that the live-fire exercise is a routine and safe practice. Communications Director William Martin told The New York Times, “The Marine Corps says it’s an established and safe practice.” However, Newsom’s office fired back, urging for accountability in light of the dangerous outcome.
“Without a doubt an apology is owed — to not just Californians, but all Americans,” Newsom’s team insisted, highlighting the irony of their earlier warnings being validated by the incident. The California Highway Patrol confirmed that metal shrapnel did hit one of its vehicles, with Chief Tony Coronado noting, “This was an unusual and concerning situation.”
With the First Marine Expeditionary Force investigating the incident, they maintained that rehearsals were conducted to ensure safety. “Marines fire artillery on Camp Pendleton nearly every week,” they stated, emphasizing their trust in the safety protocols.
The fallout from this event has raised critical questions about the risk posed to civilians during military exercises. As investigations continue, all eyes remain on the response from the White House and military officials regarding safety assurances in future operations.
As the situation develops, Newsom’s demand for answers and accountability from federal representatives underscores the need for transparency in military practices that intersect with civilian safety. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by military demonstrations, particularly in populated areas.
Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to monitor this urgent situation and the responses from all involved parties.
