Grand Central Terminal Unveils Holiday Scent Campaign NOW!
UPDATE: Commuters at Grand Central Terminal are experiencing a festive surprise as the air fills with the scent of vanilla and fresh pine. This unique aroma, part of a groundbreaking advertising campaign by Bath & Body Works, is being pumped into the station through the end of November.
As the busy holiday season kicks into high gear, the usual mix of subway odors is replaced by a “Christmassy” scent, captivating the attention of hurried travelers. Bath & Body Works has installed diffusers along the 42nd Street shuttle train platform, releasing visible bursts of fragrance that many commuters may not even notice.
20 to 30 pounds (9 to 14 kilograms) of this holiday scent is anticipated to be dispersed by the campaign’s conclusion. Commuter Jerome Murray expressed his appreciation: “It smells better than the normal New York City tunnels that we normally smell here.”
The area is a bustling hub, with thousands moving quickly to catch the Times Square shuttle every four to five minutes. Kelly Rodriguez, 23, described the aroma as “very Christmassy,” while Kathleen Baptiste, 60, reflected that it reminds her of “fabric softeners.”
Though the scent is subtle, even some riders admitted they missed it while passing through. Without the accompanying promotional posters, one might mistake it for a fellow passenger’s perfume. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), which oversees the city’s transit system, confirms this is the first aroma-based advertising initiative within the network.
In an effort to forge new revenue streams, the MTA had previously tested this concept in Queens and Brooklyn last year to gauge safety and gather feedback. So far, Mary John, the agency’s director of commercial ventures, reports no complaints have been received.
According to Jamie Sohosky, Bath & Body Works’ chief marketing officer, the choice of “Fresh Balsam” for this campaign stems from its status as a beloved holiday scent. Grand Central was selected due to the high volume of foot traffic, making it an ideal location for the promotion.
As the holiday season approaches, this innovative campaign not only enhances the commuter experience but also highlights a fresh approach to advertising within public transport. Stay tuned for more developments as the festive scent continues to waft through one of New York City’s most iconic transit hubs.
