Hyrox CEO Reveals Competition Structure for All Fitness Levels

UPDATE: Hyrox’s cofounder and CEO, Christian Toetzke, has just unveiled crucial insights into the structure of the viral fitness competition. In a recent episode of the “Opening Bid” podcast, Toetzke emphasized that the races are categorized to ensure that everyday participants do not compete against elite athletes, often referred to as “Greek statues.”
The competition, which has seen explosive growth since its inception in 2017 in Germany, is set to host over 80 competitions globally in 2025, attracting more than 550,000 participants. This significant uptick in involvement highlights Hyrox’s commitment to inclusivity in fitness.
Toetzke explained that Hyrox features two distinct categories: the “open” and the “pro.” Participants in the pro category face heavier weights and more challenging requirements, effectively separating top-tier athletes from casual competitors. “That was on purpose,” Toetzke stated, underscoring the design meant to foster a supportive atmosphere for all fitness levels. “So the guys that look like Greek statues — or the girls — they sign up for the pro division, which is much harder because you have to move much heavier weights around.”
He added that the open category allows participants to feel more at ease among peers with similar fitness levels, ensuring a more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Competitors are also segregated by gender, enhancing the fairness of the competition.
Hyrox participants must conquer eight functional workout stations, running a kilometer between each. These stations include demanding exercises such as sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, wall balls, and sandbag lunges. The race format is designed not only to challenge physical limits but also to foster a community spirit among fitness enthusiasts.
Demand for Hyrox tickets has skyrocketed, with many fans likening the struggle to secure entries to the frenzy surrounding Glastonbury or Taylor Swift’s concerts. Tickets are priced around $110, reflecting the high interest in this unique fitness event.
In a bold vision for the future, Toetzke revealed aspirations to make Hyrox an Olympic sport by the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia. He plans to present a proposal to the International Olympic Committee advocating for the inclusion of Hyrox, stating, “Gym fitness has to be represented at the Olympic Games.”
As Hyrox continues to gain momentum, the competition’s structure aims to empower participants of all backgrounds, fostering a sense of belonging in the world of fitness. With more details about upcoming events and potential Olympic aspirations, fitness fans and competitors alike are eagerly watching what unfolds next.
Stay tuned for further updates on Hyrox and its journey toward Olympic recognition!
