Jerry Seinfeld Fundraiser Sparks Urgent Debate Over Paramount Cuts
URGENT UPDATE: The upcoming performance of legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora has ignited a fierce debate over the theater’s funding following dramatic cuts proposed by the city. This highly anticipated event, scheduled for January, has already nearly sold out, with tickets priced as high as $400 and a limited number available for a gala reception at $800.
The situation has become increasingly dire for the Paramount, which faced significant budget cuts after the city announced it would provide $0 in funding for the theater in the proposed budget for 2026. This follows earlier indications that the theater would receive $2.5 million, a fraction of the $5.6 million initially requested. The announcement blindsided many, including Tim Rater, President of the Paramount Theatre, who expressed frustration at the lack of expected support.
The city, grappling with a substantial budget deficit, has also decided to replace five long-serving members of the Aurora Civic Center Authority. Mayor John Laesch has insisted that the cuts are necessary, claiming, “Do the math,” in response to community pushback. However, critics argue that the cuts jeopardize the cultural revitalization that the Paramount has brought to Aurora, drawing in 630,000 patrons in just the past year, with 83% coming from outside the city and contributing approximately $23 million to local businesses.
Local residents, such as Bruce and Linda Grider, have voiced concerns about the potential loss of the Paramount’s momentum. “A year ago, people were discussing the centennial celebration in six years,” said Linda. “Now, there is a different feel. I hate to lose what has been built.”
The Aurora Civic Center Authority is now scrambling to adjust its operations under the new budget constraints. Board President Jonathan Hylton emphasized the challenges posed by the changing parameters set by the city administration, stating, “When you have a moving target, it makes it hard to determine our path forward.”
Despite the challenges, support for the Paramount remains strong among local leaders. Several city council members have committed to seeking funding solutions, with Alderman Carl Franco calling for a referendum to reconsider the current governance structure, suggesting that a city manager might better oversee operations. The fate of the proposed City of Lights Center, a key component of downtown Aurora’s arts plan, remains uncertain as the administration’s priorities shift.
As the Seinfeld show approaches, the urgency of the situation at the Paramount becomes increasingly apparent. The event not only signifies the theater’s continued appeal but also highlights the critical need for community support in the face of looming budget cuts.
Paramount leaders remain hopeful, with Rater stating, “There will be a world where we can celebrate our 100th anniversary with downtown Aurora recognized as an example of how a community can be revitalized.” With the stakes high and community pride on the line, the upcoming Seinfeld gala may prove pivotal in shaping the future of the Paramount Theatre and its role in Aurora’s cultural landscape.
As this story develops, community members and arts supporters are urged to stay engaged and vocal in advocating for the Paramount’s future.
