UPDATE: The community mourns the loss of Joseph Angelo Legueri, who peacefully passed away on October 9, 2025, at the age of 81. A cherished educator and family man, Legueri’s legacy is one of laughter, love, and lasting impact.

Legueri dedicated his life to teaching, beginning his career at Duluth Cathedral in 1967 and inspiring countless students until his retirement in 2001. His unique sense of humor resonated with many, often prompting students to exclaim, “The heck you say?” during his engaging classes.

In 1962, Joe met the love of his life, Shirley, while driving the after-school activity bus. They celebrated an incredible 58 years of marriage, building a life together filled with adventure in the woods and raising two children, Tony and Gina Haggard. Joe was not just a father; he was a beloved grandfather to Thomas, Cooper, and Kelsie, teaching them the importance of silliness and unconditional love.

Born to Dorothy and Angelo Legueri in Nashwauk, Joe was the only son among four sisters: Patti Williams, Jeannie Sunnarborg, Margie Legueri, and Marianne Cable. His playful spirit and knack for mischief kept his family entertained throughout his life.

A true renaissance man, Legueri was not only a dedicated teacher but also a skilled builder and a passionate automotive enthusiast, famously restoring a 1948 Studebaker. His talents extended to writing, where he shared his stories and reflections with others.

In place of a traditional service, Legueri’s family encourages friends and loved ones to celebrate his life by sharing a drink and a story, no matter how exaggerated. “Raise a glass, tell a story that may or may not be true, and laugh a little too loudly—because that’s exactly how Joe lived,” his family stated.

As the community reflects on Legueri’s remarkable life, his influence on students, family, and friends will undoubtedly continue to resonate. The urgency to honor his memory brings people together, reminding everyone of the joy he spread throughout his life.
