URGENT UPDATE: A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to immediately cease the deployment of the California National Guard in Los Angeles. U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer ruled on Wednesday that control of the troops must be returned to the state, following a preliminary injunction sought by California officials.

This ruling is a significant blow to President Donald Trump‘s administration as it attempts to use state Guard troops for immigration enforcement without the governor’s consent. However, Judge Breyer has placed the ruling on hold until Monday, allowing time for potential appeals.

California officials argued that the circumstances in Los Angeles have drastically changed since the initial deployment of over 4,000 National Guard members in June. As of late October, this number has dwindled to only about 100 troops actively stationed in the area.

The administration had extended the deployment until February to continue using California National Guard members in locations like Portland, Oregon. This move faced fierce opposition from local mayors and governors in Democratic-led cities, raising questions about the administration’s tactics amid rising tensions over immigration policies.

The U.S. Justice Department has stated that these Guard members are still necessary to protect federal personnel and property in Los Angeles. This ongoing legal battle highlights the contentious relationship between state and federal authorities over military resources and immigration enforcement.

As developments continue to unfold, all eyes will be on the upcoming decisions from the court and the implications for the state’s National Guard operations. Stay tuned for more updates on this urgent situation.
