Kamaru Usman Eyes Two-Division UFC Glory After UFC 322
URGENT UPDATE: Kamaru Usman is plotting a dramatic finale to his UFC career, targeting a shot at becoming a two-division champion. In a revealing interview with TMZ Sports, Usman shared his ambitious blueprint, which hinges on the outcome of the highly anticipated UFC 322 main event this Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
In this pivotal matchup, current welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena will defend his title against Islam Makhachev, who is moving up from lightweight to challenge for gold in the 170 lb. division. Usman, a former welterweight champion himself, is keenly watching the fight, stating, “I think [the fight is] a toss-up, but I do think Islam has the grappling edge when it goes down to the ground.”
Usman, 38, has not fought since defeating Joaquin Buckley by unanimous decision in June 2023. He expressed a strong desire to face the winner of the UFC 322 title fight, emphasizing the importance of this opportunity in his quest for legacy. “The storybook would be to go and grab this title, then go and grab the other title,” he mentioned, referencing his aspirations to capture the middleweight title currently held by Khamzat Chimaev.
Chimaev, who handed Usman one of his four career losses in a closely contested match, remains a significant figure in Usman’s plans. “I think that’s an intriguing fight,” Usman stated, highlighting the excitement surrounding a potential rematch. “That’s a compelling fight that everybody would want to see on a full training camp to go out and challenge him.”
With his sights set on becoming a two-division champion, Usman acknowledged that this accolade is the only missing piece in his illustrious career. “Go out and get that. And at that point, then you look back and go, ‘Oh, what else is there to do?’” he remarked, showcasing his determination and ambition as he plans his return to the Octagon.
As the UFC 322 main event approaches, all eyes will be on the outcome, which could shape the future of both Usman and the welterweight division. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this unfolding drama will impact Usman’s legacy and the landscape of the UFC.
Stay tuned for updates as the fight draws near and Usman’s plans become clearer. Will he secure a title shot and embark on the path to becoming a two-division champion? The next few days will be crucial.
