Kyle Hendricks Retires After 12 MLB Seasons, Leaving Legacy
BREAKING: Longtime Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks has announced his retirement after an impressive 12-year career in Major League Baseball. The news comes just days after Hendricks wrapped up his final season with the Los Angeles Angels, where he recorded an 8-10 record and a 4.76 ERA in 2024.
Hendricks, 35, is best known for his time with the Cubs, where he became a fan favorite and a key player in the team’s historic 2016 World Series championship, ending a 108-year title drought. Over his 11 years with the Cubs, he amassed 97 wins and maintained a solid 3.68 ERA, including winning the ERA title in 2016 with a remarkable 2.13 ERA.
In a game that solidified his status as a Cubs legend, Hendricks dominated the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 of the 2016 NLCS, throwing 7 1/3 shutout innings and leading Chicago to the World Series. His performance in Game 7 of the World Series was equally pivotal, where he helped secure the championship in extra innings.
Hendricks, affectionately nicknamed “The Professor“, was celebrated not only for his skillful pitching but also for his mentorship of younger teammates. His mastery of the change-up and sinker kept hitters guessing, despite his fastball never exceeding 90 mph.
In his final appearance at Wrigley Field at the end of the 2024 season, Hendricks received a heartfelt farewell from fans after another stellar performance against the Cincinnati Reds. Teammate Ian Happ praised him, stating, “He’s a perfect example of what it means to be a Chicago Cub. It’s important to honor that.”
Currently, Hendricks has no plans for coaching or front office roles, expressing his desire to spend time with family after a remarkable career. As he steps away from the diamond, his legacy in Chicago and the league will certainly be remembered.
Fans and players alike are now reflecting on Hendricks’ contributions to the game and the deep impact he has made both on and off the field. As baseball enthusiasts look forward to the next chapter, Hendricks leaves behind a shining example of dedication and excellence in the sport.
