After dominating the first two sets, Langdon Area/Munich faced a brief challenge, trailing 7-5 in the third set. However, they quickly regrouped, launching an impressive rally to seize a commanding 19-9 lead and ultimately secure the victory. Coach Rich Olson credited the team’s defensive prowess and strong serving as key factors in their success.
“We were sparked by our defense tonight, there’s no question,” Olson stated. “We had some outstanding digs and won some of the longer rallies, too.”
Standout performances included Hilary Haaven with 15 kills and 23 digs, while Mya Swanson contributed seven kills, five aces, and nine digs. The Cardinals’ victory solidifies their impressive season record at 36-5.
In a twist, this victory marks the last year of the two-class system as North Dakota transitions to a three-class format. “We’re playing for each other and that’s fun,” Olson added, highlighting the team’s chemistry and commitment.
Meanwhile, Park River/Fordville-Lankin finished the match with a record of 22-14. Coach Nicole Wollangk, named Region 2B Coach of the Year, acknowledged the challenges but remained optimistic about her team’s future.
“We have been competitive. We know we can compete and play at that level,” Wollangk remarked, referring to their upcoming state qualifier tournament.
In the third-place game, Benson County defeated New Rockford-Sheyenne 3-1, setting up a crucial opportunity for a state berth in the upcoming tournament. Benson County’s standout players included Aubrey Kenner with 20 kills and 16 digs.
The All-Region 2B team was announced post-match, recognizing top talents from various teams, including Ava Peterson from New Rockford-Sheyenne as the Senior of the Year.
As excitement builds for the state tournament, Langdon Area/Munich aims to carry their momentum forward, while Park River/Fordville-Lankin looks to regroup and make their mark in the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates on this thrilling volleyball season!
