Lehigh County Agriculture Education Day Unites Students and Farmers
UPDATE: Hays Elementary fourth graders are engaged in hands-on learning about agriculture today, October 21, 2025, during the exciting fourth annual Lehigh County Agriculture Education Day at the Agri-Plex on the Allentown Fairgrounds. This event is a collaborative effort between local organizations to educate students about the origins of their food and the essential role agriculture plays in their community.
As students shake milk to make butter and create fresh applesauce, they learn directly from local farmers and agricultural educators. Roger Bowman, owner of Winterside Farm, is among the key figures teaching these young learners about sheep and their importance in farming.
The event, supported by the Allentown Fair, the Lehigh County Agricultural Society, Lehigh County Granges, and the Penn State Agricultural Extension, aims to inspire the next generation about local agriculture. Students are getting hands-on experiences that highlight where their food comes from, making the lessons both educational and memorable.
In a heartwarming demonstration, students like Karlee and Ian are tasting freshly made applesauce and interacting with live chicks while learning about animal husbandry.
“It’s amazing to see kids so enthusiastic about agriculture,”
said Kelly Weisner, a 4-H educator assisting at the event.
The Lehigh County Agriculture Education Day is not just a day of fun; it represents a significant effort to connect children with local food systems. The participating organizations emphasize the importance of understanding agricultural practices and instilling a sense of community responsibility in students.
Students are also making connections with local farmers, fostering relationships that could influence their future choices regarding food and agriculture. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between urban youth and the agricultural practices that sustain their communities.
As the event continues, attendees are encouraged to share their experiences and insights on social media, showcasing the importance of agriculture education. The day is a resounding success, with students actively participating in activities that will leave a lasting impression.
