Major Kids’ Brand Carter’s to Close 150 Stores Amid Tariffs
URGENT UPDATE: Carter’s, one of the largest names in children’s clothing, has just announced a staggering plan to close 150 stores over the next few years, impacting hundreds of employees nationwide. The announcement was made during their latest earnings call, where executives cited rising tariffs as a significant factor behind the drastic changes.
Over the next few years, approximately 100 locations are set to shutter by 2026, with no new stores planned to open. This decision reflects a broader trend in the retail sector, where brick-and-mortar establishments are struggling to compete with the growing dominance of online shopping. However, Carter’s leaders stressed that the increasing tariffs on imported goods have compounded their challenges, costing the company millions this year alone.
To mitigate these financial pressures, Carter’s will cut approximately 15 percent of its office-based workforce, totaling around 300 jobs. This move is expected to save the company about $35 million annually once the adjustments are fully implemented.
Carter’s operates 32 locations in New Jersey, including stores in bustling areas such as Atlantic City, Paramus, and Freehold Raceway Mall. While the company has not yet identified which specific stores will close, many leases will expire in the coming years, providing a timeline for these closures.
As the retail landscape shifts, Carter’s plans to take this opportunity to “rethink its business model,” aiming to adapt to the changing market dynamics. Customers are encouraged to shop early for popular items like onesies and the iconic OshKosh B’gosh brand, as in-store availability will dwindle.
This development is a wake-up call for the retail industry, highlighting the profound impact of economic factors like tariffs on local jobs and consumer choice. With these closures looming, families who rely on Carter’s for children’s clothing may need to adjust their shopping habits significantly.
Stay tuned for further updates as Carter’s navigates these challenges and the potential implications for its loyal customer base.
