Major Underage Drinking Sting at Tempe Tavern: 249 Arrested
UPDATE: A substantial law enforcement operation has just unfolded at Tempe Tavern, leading to a staggering 249 arrests in a major underage drinking sting on November 20. The Tempe Police Department confirmed that this extensive crackdown predominantly targeted individuals for underage drinking and possession of fake IDs. Most of those arrested were cited and released, with only three individuals booked into the Tempe City Jail.
This latest operation follows a previous sting in April, which resulted in 167 arrests and sparked significant public backlash, including a controversial social media apology over a disrespectful shirt design. The recent crackdown has intensified scrutiny on the bar, and the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control (ADLLC) is now evaluating potential sanctions against the establishment.
The sting operation involved approximately 57 officers, responding to numerous complaints about underage consumption at the bar. A representative from the Tempe Police emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating,
“These are shocking numbers. We don’t celebrate them. Underage drinking puts people at risk – and that’s why we take it seriously.”
Reports indicate that many arrested patrons provided false information to officers, highlighting a critical issue regarding identification verification at the bar. As the ADLLC considers possible repercussions, including the suspension of the bar’s liquor license, their investigations lieutenant stated that no decisions will be made until the police conclude their investigation.
With the potential for significant fines and the looming threat of a liquor license suspension, Tempe Tavern now faces an uncertain future. The community is left to grapple with the ramifications of this extensive operation and its implications for local nightlife safety.
As developments continue to unfold, all eyes are on the ADLLC’s next steps and the outcomes of the ongoing investigation. The implications of this sting are far-reaching, not just for the bar but for the entire community, emphasizing the urgent need for responsible alcohol service and adherence to legal drinking age regulations.
