Makhachev Dominates Della Maddalena to Claim Welterweight Title
UPDATE: Islam Makhachev has officially captured the welterweight championship, dominating Jack Della Maddalena in a stunning performance during UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden in New York on October 21, 2023. Makhachev’s unanimous decision victory marks a significant milestone, as he becomes a two-division champion and ties Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history at 16 consecutive wins.
With an impressive display of control, Makhachev (28-1) overwhelmed Della Maddalena (18-3), securing every takedown he attempted and dominating the fight for a total of 19 minutes and 10 seconds. Makhachev outstruck his opponent an astounding 123-32, effectively using calf kicks to hinder Della Maddalena’s movement throughout the bout.
“This is the dream,” Makhachev expressed after the fight. “All my life I’ve fought for this. I worked hard for this moment.” His decisive victory showcased not only his technical skills but also a strategic plan that left Della Maddalena unable to mount any serious offense. The Australian fighter, who had previously not lost since his early career setbacks, found himself on the defensive from the start.
“My life has changed,” Makhachev noted, reflecting on his transition from lightweight to welterweight. “I didn’t have to cut weight. I can do what I want. It made this night easy.” Indeed, Makhachev’s commanding performance left little doubt about his capabilities in the new weight class.
As Makhachev prepares to defend his title in a highly competitive welterweight division, he is already eyeing future challenges. After claiming his place as arguably the greatest lightweight in UFC history, he stated, “Open the White House,” referring to a major UFC event planned for 2026.
Fans and analysts are eager to see who will step up to challenge Makhachev next, but for now, the celebration of his remarkable achievement continues. This victory not only elevates his legacy but also sets the stage for exciting matchups ahead in the UFC.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as Makhachev’s reign in the welterweight division unfolds.
